Want to different dining experience? Maybe watching the chef cooks your food in front of you? Then you must try it at Benihana. Benihana is a chain Japanese Teppanyaki and Sushi restaurant.
We went to the Benihana on Birch Street at Newport Beach, nearby the Santa Ana Airport. It was easy to find, you can’t miss the big red ‘Benihana’ sign in front of the restaurant. There are ample parking spaces available. The outdoor has a very nice landspace with a little red arched bridge in a small garden.
When we arrived at 11:45am, there were already many guests waiting in front of us. There are plenty of space and chairs for waiting patrons. The hosts are very nice and helpful. My questions about their menu and seating were answered promptly.
We opted for the teppan table but they do have a sushi and bar section which were fairly empty when we were there.
Soon, the guests were seated by group. Our party of three and another party of two were waiting for about 15 minutes before we were seated with another group of three guests whom just came in. Most of the earlier guests had reservation. So it might be a good idea to make a reservation if you are planning to visit this restaurant. Unless, if you did it last minute like us, then reservation may not be possible. It wasn’t a long wait for us. But their teppanyaki room is big, and has at least 10 or more teppan tables. I also overhead there is a big room at the back of the restaurant intend for big party reservation.
I always love how they have kids’ menu for kids 12 and younger. Here is the menu. My son opted for the Chicken & shrimp with chicken fried rice (additional $3.25). The regular kid’s menu comes with a bowl of Japanese onion soup OR Benihana salad, shrimp appetizer, vegetables, steamed rice and ice cream.
My husband ordered the seared Ahi Tuna set from the dinner menu and I had the Duet Lunch set with scallops and beef julienne. His set menu came with Japanese onion soup and salad, fried rice, vegetables, shrimp appetizer and the sesame crusted tuna. The server upgraded his fried rice to chicken fried rice without we knowing, but we just let it go.
My Duet Lunch set came with the salad, fried rice and the scallop & hibachi beef julienne. The server told me if I wanted to upgrade my fried rice to chicken fried rice for additional $1, I said no. We didn’t know that the $1 upgrade is only applicable for lunch menu and not the dinner menu. When we got our bill, we found out my husband’s chicken fried rice upgrade was $3.75. But we didn’t want to argue. Total came out to be around $65 (without tips).
Here are the pictures of our food!
